Sardinia by Season: When Is the Best Time to Visit?
Sardinia is usually equated with summer holidays โ but the island has something to offer nearly all year round. An overview of what to expect in each season.
Spring (March to May)
The island truly blooms: wildflowers, Mediterranean scrubland in full glory, pleasant temperatures for hiking and inland excursions. The sea is still too cool for most to swim, but beaches and sights are nearly empty.
Summer (June to September)
The classic travel season โ and correspondingly busy. July and August are peak season with the highest prices, packed beaches, and sometimes access restrictions at the best-known coves. June and September offer similarly warm swimming weather with noticeably less crowding โ for many, the best compromise.
Autumn (October to November)
The sea often stays pleasantly warm well into October, while many restaurants and tour operators already have reduced hours or close entirely. A good time for hiking and cultural trips, less suited for anyone relying on a full tourist offering.
Winter (December to February)
Mild compared to Central Europe, but often windy and rainy on the coast. Many beach towns feel deserted, as seasonal businesses close. In exchange, the "other" Sardinia shows itself: cities like Cagliari or Alghero, traditional festivals inland, and noticeably lower prices wherever things are open at all.
In short
- For a full beach holiday: July/August, with correspondingly high prices and crowds.
- For the best compromise: June or September.
- For nature, hiking, and quiet: April, May, or October.
- For culture and low prices: shoulder season from November to March, with limited open businesses.
