A few organizational points that are often underestimated when preparing a Sardinia trip – from power outlets to the current trend around beach reservations.
Best time to visit
July and August are peak season: packed beaches, high prices, sometimes access restrictions at popular coves. June, September, and early October usually still offer warm swimming weather with noticeably less hustle – a good compromise for anyone not tied to school holidays.
Before your trip
- Pack a travel adapter: Italy uses plug types F/L. Travelers from Switzerland (type J) or the UK (type G) need an adapter.
- Check your travel health insurance: especially when traveling by ferry or flight, it's worth reviewing your existing policy.
- Book a rental car early: without your own car or ferry travel, a rental car is practically essential in Sardinia – public transport outside the larger cities is sparse.
- Keep an eye on beach reservations: an increasing number of the island's best-known coves (including in the Golfo di Orosei and around San Teodoro) now require an online reservation with a visitor cap from June to September – a growing trend to protect coastal ecosystems. Research the relevant portals and deadlines (often just a few days ahead) in advance.
Packing
- Sturdy shoes for hikes or boat excursions.
- Sunscreen with a high SPF – the sun in Sardinia is strong even outside peak season.
- A light sweater or thin jacket for cooler evenings, especially in spring and autumn.
- A snorkel set, if you have one – many coves are excellent for it.
A current trend across the island: more and more nature reserves and popular beaches use visitor caps and online reservations instead of free access – advance planning matters more than it used to.

- Plan drive times realistically: Sardinia looks compact on a map, but winding coastal roads and drives through towns cost time. Budget generously for trips between regions.
- Cash for smaller places: card payment isn't accepted everywhere, especially at small beach bars or markets.
- Restaurant reservations a day ahead: even outside peak season, popular addresses fill up quickly on nice evenings.
