Sardinia with Kids: Family-Friendly Tips
Shallow water, short drives, and a few kid-friendly excursions – with the right planning, Sardinia is a rewarding destination for families.
Beaches with shallow water
Not every dream beach is kid-friendly – coves with steep drop-offs or waves suit young children less well. Especially shallow and sheltered options include Cala Brandinchi and La Cinta near San Teodoro, as well as Tuerredda in the southwest (see our beaches article for more details).
Excursions that are fun for kids too
- Boat tours with dolphin watching or to caves are usually a highlight for children (see our dolphin tours article).
- Nuraghi to climb around (e.g. Nuraghe Losa) often spark more enthusiasm than a classic museum.
- Grotte di Nettuno near Alghero – stalactites and an underground lake usually fascinate younger children too.
- Watching the wild horses of the Giara – a simple walk with good odds of animal sightings (see our animals article).
Alternating between beach days and short, kid-friendly excursions keeps the holiday from feeling too monotonous for little ones.
Practical notes
- Estimate drive times realistically: Sardinia is bigger than it looks on the map – better to avoid long car rides with small children (see our article on driving).
- Plan around midday heat: in high summer, a calm rhythm with a midday break pays off – many towns take a siesta anyway.
- Pharmacies (Farmacia) are well signposted and found in practically every larger town, in case of a sunburn or a jellyfish sting.
- Restaurants are kid-friendly, even without special kids' menus – a half portion of pasta is usually no problem.
Practical tip: a sun sail or beach tent is worth its weight in gold on many Sardinian beaches – natural shade is often scarce at the most popular coves.
