Sardinia in Autumn: Ferry or Flight, Genoa or Livorno?
Autumn is one of the best times to visit Sardinia – quieter, cheaper, and pleasantly mild. But getting there involves a few extra considerations that don't matter in high summer.
Swell: is the ferry still pleasant in autumn?
In September and early October, the crossing is barely different from summer. From mid/late October, the likelihood of autumn storms in the Tyrrhenian Sea rises noticeably, which can mean noticeable swell and, in rarer cases, delays or rescheduling. The large car ferries handle normal swell without issue – it mainly gets uncomfortable for people who are generally prone to seasickness.
Ferry or flight in autumn?
Both options have their merits in the shoulder season:
- Flight – usually the faster option and, in the shoulder season, often the cheaper one too, and less weather-dependent. Downside: no car of your own, limited luggage.
- Ferry – essential if you want to bring your own car or motorhome, and for many also more relaxing than flying. In autumn, though, the shipping lines noticeably cut frequencies compared to the summer schedule – check early whether your preferred connection even runs that day.
Genoa or Livorno – which one?
Both ports are good starting points, but differ depending on your route:
- Genoa – usually the shorter drive from Germany and Switzerland, well connected to the motorway network.
- Livorno – attractive if you're already planning a stopover in Tuscany, located a bit further south.
