Where to Stay in Sardinia: Hotel, Vacation Rental, or Agriturismo?
The type of accommodation you choose shapes your travel style at least as much as the region you pick. An overview of the most common options.
Hotel
The simplest option, often with breakfast, a pool, and reception service. The widest selection, from simple to very upscale, is found especially on the coast (Costa Smeralda, San Teodoro, Alghero). Well suited for shorter stays or anyone who'd rather not organize much themselves.

Vacation rental or villa
More space, your own kitchen, and usually more privacy – a popular choice for families or longer stays. Vacation rentals are also often located away from the big hotel complexes, in ordinary residential parts of coastal towns, allowing a more authentic everyday feel.
Agriturismo
Many of the farms we've featured primarily as a restaurant tip in our agriturismi article also offer rooms or small vacation apartments. Ideal for anyone wanting to experience the interior away from the coast while having direct access to regional cuisine.
Bed & breakfast
Usually small, family-run houses with just a few rooms – a more personal alternative to a classic hotel, often with good insider tips from the hosts about the area.
Camping
The cheapest and most nature-close option, covered in detail in our own camping article.
What to look out for when booking
- Assess the location realistically: "near the beach" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere – checking a map and current reviews helps.
- Watch the season: in peak season (July/August), good accommodations are often booked out months in advance.
- Check cancellation terms: especially for early bookings, an option with free cancellation is worth it.
- Ask about air conditioning: not every older property has it as standard – a relevant criterion in high summer.
