Wild Boars in Sardinia
Few animals are as present in Sardinia as the wild boar (Italian: cinghiale) – both in the wild and on the plate. What you should know about Sardinia's wild boars.
Widespread, rarely actually rare
Wild boars are among Sardinia's most common wild animals and are found across the whole island, especially numerous in the forested mountain regions inland such as the Supramonte or the Barbagia. In recent years the population has grown so much that agriculture and road traffic are regularly affected – the region has responded, among other things, with extended hunting seasons.
Where encounters are possible
Sightings in broad daylight are rare, since the animals are mostly active at dusk and at night. Anyone hiking inland or driving through forested areas in the evening should still expect wildlife crossings – wild boars can cross roads suddenly.
Cinghiale on the plate
Wild boar is one of the classic meats of Sardinian cuisine, often served as cinghiale in agrodolce (braised sweet-and-sour) or as a ragù with pasta. In rural restaurants and agriturismi, cinghiale is especially common on the menu – a dish closely tied to the hunting tradition of the interior.
Practical notes
- Driving at dusk: drive carefully on country roads inland in the evening and at night, especially through forested areas.
- While hiking: wild boars generally avoid people on their own – a respectful distance is enough, though a sow with piglets should be given a wide berth.
- Get curious about the food: if you want to try Sardinian cuisine away from the coast, you'll find cinghiale dishes on almost any agriturismo's menu.
