Chia: Dunes, a Tower, and Turquoise Water in the South
White shifting dunes, a historic watchtower on the hill, and a play of turquoise and blue: Chia in southern Sardinia is one of the island's most photogenic spots.
Location & getting there
Chia lies about a 45-minute drive southwest of Cagliari. The beach area actually consists of several coves (including Su Giudeu and Sa Colonia) separated by dunes and rocks.
The watchtower
On a hill above the bay stands the Torre di Chia, a 16th-century Spanish watchtower. The short climb up is worth it for the panoramic view over the entire coastline.
Practical tip: The dune landscape is protected – please stick to the marked paths so as not to damage the vegetation.
Chia combines beach, dunes, and history in a small area like almost nowhere else on the island.
Swimming & wind
The region is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to regular thermal winds – for calmer swimming, the more sheltered coves like Su Giudeu are the better choice.
