Cala Luna: A Cove With Caves in the Golfo di Orosei
White pebble beach, steep limestone cliffs, and several karst caves right on the water: Cala Luna is one of the more accessible – and therefore more popular – coves in the Golfo di Orosei.
Getting there: boat or hiking trail
Most of the time, visitors arrive by boat from Cala Gonone (about a 20-minute ride). If you'd rather hike, you can also reach Cala Luna via a well-marked coastal trail from Cala Fuili – roughly 1.5 hours each way, with lovely views of the steep coastline.
The caves
Several grottoes lie at the northern end of the beach, some of which can be entered at low tide or when the water is calm. They once served as a resting place for monk seals – now practically gone from the region, but the caves remain well worth a visit.
Swimming
The water is clear and deep turquoise, shallowing out toward the shore. Because of its popularity, it can get crowded around midday in high season – arrive early or travel in the shoulder season for a much quieter beach.
